Should I Be Practicing Scales

My short answer is, Yes! Now for my long answer.

Scales and chords are the building blocks of music. If you truly want to excel in music and want to understand the inner workings of music, then I would definitely suggest practicing scales.

  • Practice scales even if you don’t understand why. My teacher had me learn the 12 major scales and the 12 melodic minor scales. I didn’t know why at the time, but when I developed the interest to start composing and writing songs as a teenager, my knowledge of scales was extremely useful.

Practicing scales on a daily basis also developed my finger technique to an extremely high level.

What does that mean?

It means that I don’t have any problem playing difficult musical passages because my finger strength and dexterity was developed at an early age through my daily practice of scales.

My teacher also had me practice broken chords. I’ll talk more about broken chords, also know as arpeggios, in tomorrow’s post. Click Here: How To Excel In Music - Part 2
