Jazz piano lessons focus on chords, melody, rhythm and improvisation. Being able to read sheet music is helpful, but there are other skills that are more important.

• The song arrangement to "Fly Me To The Moon" that one of my jazz piano students is playing in the video directly above is not available in sheet music form.

In fact, there are many great jazz piano arrangements that are available in recorded form -- but if you want to play these particular arrangements, you will need to develop your ear.

• The piano arrangement being played in the above video was originally played by jazz pianist, Beegie Adair. You can check out her video below.

Matthew and I had to transcribe this song note by note from her studio recording. Matthew's ear grew by leaps and bounds throughout this process, as did his knowledge of chords and jazz improvisation. Of course, Matthew put his own little spin on this great jazz standard.
