Piano Lessons By Ear

Lesson 2

How This Works

In Lesson 2 you will have to determine where to place the left-hand chords.

  • Since you'll be learning simple 2-chord songs for a while, I will always let you know what those two chords are, and, place blank lines above the melody notes to show where each chord should be played.

It will be your job to figure out what chord goes on each blank line. Hopefully, you've been practicing the C major and G7 chords shown below.

  • The yellow triangle in each chord illustration represents Middle C. Both chords will be played below, or to the left
    of Middle C.

Assignment #2

Your Assignment: Listen to the MP3 by clicking on the link directly below to help you hear where each chord is being played. By now you should have figured out the right-hand melody and downloaded the sheet music displaying the correct melody notes to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".

Assignment Tip: The blank lines above the melody notes indicate where the chords should be placed. Remember, there are only two chords in this song, the C major chord and the G7 chord.

It's your job to place either a C chord symbol or a G7 chord symbol on each blank line.

  • Hint: There is only one G7 chord in the entire song. Click on the MP3 Audio Link of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and try to focus on just the chords. Since all but one of the chords are C major chords, all you need to do is listen for that one chord that sounds different from all the rest, which will be the G7 chord.

Song Title: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

MP3: Audio Link: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Key: C Major

Starting Note: Middle C

Range: Low Note - middle C, High Note: 3rd Space C

Sheet Music Download: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Keep practicing the C major and G7 chords, as they will be the two chords that we'll be using for a while. Once we get to 3-chord songs, you will need to know the F major chord.

If you'd like to get a head start, you can use the illustration directly below to start learning the F major chord.

Next Week's Lesson

Since chords are such an important part of playing piano by ear, next week's lesson will feature several exercises that will help you master the C, G7 and F chords.
