The Secrets of Piano
Part 2 of 12

Yesterday I talked about my trouble with learning new songs when I was a teenager.

Learning new songs was always a huge project for me. It never came easy to me.

I took 13 years of piano lessons as a kid, and I truly believed that after 13 years of lessons — I should have been able to sit down at the piano, pull out some sheet music and play any song fairly well.

But that’s not how it was for me.

And that’s not how it is for most people who learn piano the way that I did.

  • Most students who take traditional piano lessons every week — like I did — have to put in some serious practice time whenever they want to play a new song.

Of course — there are the rare few who are very good sight readers.

A good sight reader can play a new song from sheet music on the very first try — without any practice.

For the rest of us, we have to spend hours practicing new songs to get them to sound good.

So — when I turned 18, I quit.

  • A few months after I quit, I met a self-taught musician who played the piano like a pro.

What amazed me the most about him was — he never had a single piano lesson in his entire life — and yet he knew so much about music.

He knew more about music than I did, and that just didn’t make any sense to me.

After all, I had 13 years of FORMAL piano lessons.

I was a little upset with my piano teacher — to say the least.

Why didn’t he teach me to play the way my new friend played?

I just couldn’t wrap my mind around it.

  • What my new friend was able to do on the piano without ever having a lesson was truly mind boggling.

All I knew at that point was — I had to know his secret.

I remember being at his house one day. A song came on the radio and he just started playing along.

  • He made a few mistakes here and there, but by the end, he was playing the song perfectly.

And he did this in just a few minutes…without any sheet music.

I had years of lessons and what my friend did in a matter of minutes would have taken me weeks to accomplish.

  • It was absolutely amazing to watch. He was pulling notes out of thin air. It was magical.

That day was the greatest day of my life! In less than an hour my friend taught me 3 things about music that I had never heard in 13 years of traditional piano lessons.

It was like someone had finally let me in on this BIG secret.

The things he showed me that day were very easy concepts to understand.

  • Tomorrow I’ll talk more about this BIG Secret that my new friend shared with me.

By the end of this series you will know exactly what is necessary to play the piano at an extremely high level.
