Lesson #14
L.H. Chords - A Position

The Same Position

Notice how the A major chord switching to the E7 chord feels exactly like a D major chord switching to an A7 chord.

 Chord Positions!

Chord Positions are the key to learning chords quickly and easily. Some students think of chord positions as being the same as similar hands positions, and this would be a good way to look at it.

  • For Example: When you play a D major or an A major chord in root position, both chords have the same look and feel. That's because they are both in the same position. (see illustration below)

In addition, when you play an A7 or an E7 chord with the root note on the top of the chord, once again, both chords have the same look and feel. That's because they are both in the same position. (see illustration below)

Take your time and don't worry if you don't get it right away. Your ear will develop with each new online piano lesson.

8 Chords & Growing: You now know the I chord and the V7 chord in 4 different keys. I = One, and V = Five.

  • I or One means the chord is built off of the first note of the scale.

V or Five means the chord is built off of the fifth note of the scale. A V7 is the same as an A7 or E7 chord.
