Piano Lessons By Ear

Part 3 - Lesson 1

The illustration shown above consists of the 8 notes that make up the C major scale. If I were to ask you to figure out the notes to Row, Row, Row Your Boat in the key of C major, these would be the notes you would use.

How This Works

Since this is the first song I learned by ear, I'm going to ask you to do the same.

In this lesson and the lessons to follow, I will provide the following:

1. Your Assignment
2. Assignment Tip
3. Song Title
4. MP3 Audio Recording
5. Key of the Song
6. Starting Note
7. Range - (lowest and highest notes in the song)
8. Sheet Music Download

Once you're confident you've figured out the correct notes, you can download the sheet music. It's that easy. Enjoy Lesson 1.

Assignment #1

Your Assignment: Listen to the MP3 by clicking on the link directly below to help you learn the right-hand melody by ear. Take your time and listen to the audio recording as many times as necessary. Don't worry if you don't get it right away. If you have trouble in the beginning, then try to get just a few notes at a time.

Assignment Tip: Write out the lyrics and then write the correct melody note above each word in the lyrics. Words with more than one syllable will have multiple melody notes assigned to it.

The first lyric in Row, Row, Row Your Boat with more than one syllable is the word: Gently

Song Title: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

MP3: Audio Link: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Key: C Major

Starting Note: Middle C

Range: Low Note - middle C, High Note: 3rd Space C

Sheet Music Download: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Let's get ready for next week's lesson. In Lesson 2 you will have to determine where to place the left-hand chords.

  • Since you'll be learning simple 2-chord songs for a while, I will always let you know what those two chords are, and, place blank lines above the melody notes to show where each chord should be played.

It will be your job to figure out what chord goes on each blank line. To get ready for next week's lesson, practice the C major and G7 chords shown below.

  • The yellow triangle in each chord illustration represents Middle C. Both chords will be played below, or to the left
    of Middle C.
