The Secrets of Piano
Part 1 of 12

When I was a kid I took 13 years of classical piano lessons.

To be completely honest — lessons were boring and I really didn’t enjoy them.

  • I never got to learn songs that I wanted to play, and when I turned 18, I quit playing altogether.

I didn’t quit because I hated the piano — I have always loved the sound of the piano.

It truly is the most amazing instrument on the planet.

Why did I quit piano?

I quit because I wasn’t all that impressed with my abilities.

Don’t get me wrong — I could play the piano.

You could even say I was fairly decent.

  • My trouble was learning new songs. Learning new songs was always a huge project for me.

It never came easy to me.

I truly believed that after 13 years of piano lessons — I should have been able to sit down at the piano, pull out some sheet music and play any song fairly well.

But that’s not how it was for me.

  • And that’s not how it is for most people who learn piano the way that I did.

Most students who take traditional piano lessons every week — like I did — have to put in some serious practice time whenever they want to play a new song.

In my next post, I will tell you about a musician I met in college who showed me a new way of playing the piano.

  • With the techniques that he taught me, it was like I had discovered the BIGGEST secret in music.

The way that I play and teach now is a direct result of what my friend taught me some 40 years ago.

And what amazes me to this day, is that most piano teachers DO NOT teach these techniques to their students.

I'll talk more about this in tomorrow's post.

  • By the end of this series you will know exactly what is necessary to play the piano at an extremely high level.
