“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

- Benjamin Franklin

Now that you are learning how to play your instrument and how to read music, you are considered a budding musician. Whether or not you choose music as a career, this learning experience will stay with you for a lifetime. It’s up to you on how skilled you wish to become. Regardless, you will have an appreciation of music you never had before because, you have been “behind the scenes”, so to speak.

Last month we gave you a list of fun summer songs with most of them using the word summer in the title.

Of course there were many other songs to list without talking about summer like, “Beat It” by Michael Jackson, but that would take up the whole newsletter!

Here is a list of Summer hit songs from the 1990’s to 2017 that you can add to your collection:

1990’s:  "Step by Step"  - New Kids on the Block (1990), "Waterfalls"  - TLC, (1994) "MMMBop“ -  Hanson (1997), "If You Had My Love“  - Jennifer Lopez (1999)

2000’s: "Hanging by a Moment"  - Lifehouse (2001), "Complicated” - Avril Lavigne, (2002) “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”  - Jet (2004), “Love Song”  Sara Bareilles  (2007)“Just The Way You Are” -  Bruno Mars (2010), “Shake It Off” - Taylor Swift (2014) “Cut To The Feeling “ - Carly Rae Jepsen  (2017)

In my search for these fun, upbeat songs after the eighties, I found it very difficult to find as many artists that had the same talent both vocally and musically to match the caliber of past artists…

That’s
where you come in! Music is a product - that’s why they call it the “Music Business”. Sales reflect how much effort is put into that product. If a snack company got lazy and put less cheese in your favorite cheese snack, you would notice and eventually stop buying the snack.

Your job as a musician is not just to learn how to play your instrument, but to really
listen to music and how it makes you feel. If you really don’t like the way a song is put together, do you pretend to like it, or imagine how it could be better?

You may not think about it, but you have your own personal musician teaching you everything the famous musicians know! Your teacher isn’t just someone who likes to teach, they are real musicians guiding you to find your musical talent.

You have decades of past songs to compare the quality of today’s songs. Have you noticed that too many sound the same, or use electric sounds instead of clear vocals and instruments?

In other words, are they using less cheese?  If so, you can be the
other
“company” with a better product! Keep practicing, keep learning, keep listening – you could be the next new musician!

    Students Of The Month

Julia & James Tourtellotte

As you know, each month we feature a new Student Of The Month. This month, our piano teacher Nanci had a very difficult time deciding between two of her students.

Those students just happen to be…brother and sister! When Nanci told us how hard they both work and how they support and encourage each other, there was only one solution – a tie!

Congratulations Julia and James! Your framed Certificates of Achievement are on the way!

“Julia and James Tourtellotte are examples of model students. Their days are packed with many activities, however, they both put in the time and effort to practice the piano.

Julia
has found her way into bringing so much expression into her music, while James works very hard to perfect his pieces and the end result is amazing.

They get a tremendous amount of support from their parents, especially Mom who sat in on every lesson and practice time with them when they first started lessons.

They both practice on their own now, but Mom is always an ear shot away. Julia and James make being a teacher such a rewarding experience!

Congratulations Julia and James! Your framed Certificates of Achievement is on the way!

Take A Look!!

Did you notice that on this month's newsletter we put ice cream stamps on? A nice look for the summer, but they are actually Scratch-n-Sniff!

"Now where did I put that newsletter??"

The July 4th Holiday always makes you feel like summer is really here! There are barbeques, parades and fireworks! All of this wouldn’t be the same without patriotic music to go with it.

Holidays are wonderful times to create new songs and Independence Day has inspired many musicians to write songs for us to celebrate!

Over the years, various popular artists have sung these songs in their own unique fashion, but the one that usually comes to mind is the “Star Spangled Banner” sung by Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XXV in 1991.

We’ve
uploaded a video of her performance that day and we guarantee you’ll agree that she was amazing!

Did you know that many of our patriotic songs were created for military marching bands? These songs remind us how much we appreciate our freedoms and how thankful we are to have the troops that have made it possible!

If you know someone in the military, ask them if they play an instrument or played in a marching band! Please also take the time to thank them for their service. Have a wonderful and safe Independence Day!
